Electric heaters are a component of many dairy and processing installations — from heating washing water, through supporting processes in pasteurizers, to maintaining temperature in buffer tanks. Choosing the right power has a direct effect on process time and energy consumption.

Single-phase or three-phase

Single-phase heaters work well at lower power levels and where the farm’s electrical installation doesn’t have full three-phase supply. Three-phase heaters allow higher power output with a lower load on each individual phase — the standard choice for larger tanks and more demanding heating processes.

What affects the required power

  • The capacity of the exchanger, buffer tank or pasteurizer to be heated
  • The intended temperature rise (e.g. from 20°C to 90°C for pasteurization)
  • The time the process needs to complete in
  • Tank insulation and heat losses to the surroundings

Heater power calculator

To make selection easier, we’ve put together a simple calculator available on our Margo heaters page — just enter the tank capacity and intended process time, and the tool will calculate the approximate required heater power. It’s a good starting point before the final choice of a specific model.

Installation and safety

Heaters for heat exchangers, buffer tanks and mixers for milk and food are made in a stainless steel version, with a temperature controller to protect against overheating. Correct installation — with proper connection sealing and electrical protection — is key to safe, long operation.
